 Decorative brooches date as far back as the Bronze age, when they were fashioned in plain, simple shapes known as fibulae, used practically, primarily to fasten clothes. By medieval times, designs had become more elaborate — often depicting animals or flora — and incorporated vivid colors with inlay and enamelling. In the 20^th Century, brooches were ubiquitous, in styles ranging from neoclassical cameos to Art Nouveau insects to high-Deco abstract designs.
