Billet + Blade is a one-woman workshop in Nashville, Tennessee dedicated to making simple things from simple materials (with simple tools.) Her pieces are hand carved from locally soured fallen or trimmed trees, then hand-rubbed with linseed oil and local beeswax. Made to endure daily use for years to come.
The spurtle is a Scottish kitchen tool dating from the 15th Century. The rod-like shape means that porridge can be stirred without forming lumps, and the low surface area reduces the amount of oatmeal sticking to the tool. If you don't have one to stir your oats (or risotto or stew), you are missing one of life's great pleasures.
